NCHSAA WS/FCS School assignment is based on the residence of the parent or legal custodian within the administrative unit.
School assignment can be based on the residence of a person who presents a valid “caregiver affidavit.”
In the event the parents are separated or divorced, the residence of the student shall be that of the parent to whom custody has been awarded by a court of competent jurisdiction. If no custody order has been entered, the residence shall be deemed to be that of the parent with whom the student begins the school year (i.e. 1st semester).*
If no order has been entered, residence can be established with either parent.
Documents purporting to establish guardianship or custody issued by a notary public, an attorney, a clerk of court, or any entity other than a court of record with competent jurisdiction will not be accepted.
School must accept a valid caregiver affidavit for enrollment and decision-making purposes.
These differences mean that a student could be properly enrolled in the school, but ineligible to play sports at that school under NCHSAA enrollment guidelines!
365 RULE (WS/FCS)
A student who elects to transfer from one WS/FC school to another WS/FC school after receiving his or her 9th grade school assignment must sit out from athletic participation for 365 days from the date of transfer.

•Students who have a bona fide change in residence within the WS/FC schools. (These students will be ineligible for athletic participation only for the remainder of the sports season during which they transferred.)
Not Exceptions:
