Eight inductees announced for WS/FC High School Sports Hall of Fame

Eight people with impactful careers have been chosen for induction into the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame on May 10th, 2024.

Six athletes, one athletics director and one principal have been chosen and will be inducted formally in a ceremony. 

Here are the eight inductees:

Richard Daniels

Richard Daniels Jr. was a stand out student at Carver playing football and basketball. 

He now coaches basketball at Walkertown.

Ed Weiss

Ed Weiss retired as principal of Mount Tabor in June on 2022 where he spent 24 of his 31 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator. 

Linwood Jerald retired as athletic director at Parkland after spending more than 50 years in coaching and athletics administration. 

Jerald also served as athletic director at High Point Andrews and Atkins as well as being the defensive coordinator for Parkland’s 2001 3A state championship football team

Robert Bovender was a three-sport standout in the early 1960s and will be honored posthumously.

Bovender was the county player of the year in football in 1961 and 1962 and was an all-conference selection in baseball.

He received a scholarship to East Carolina to play football and baseball and eventually played baseball for Kinston in the Carolina League for two seasons (1964-66).

Hunter Furr was a standout football and track star  at Mount Tabor. 

Furr won 10 state championships in track and field and rushed for more than 8,000 yards and 100 touchdowns as a student athlete at Forsyth County Day and Mount Tabor.

John Floyd was a standout basketball star at Carver averaging 16.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game his senior year. 

Floyd was named Metro 4-A Player of the Year and played in the East-West All-Star game

Reggie McCummings was a football and basketball star at North Forsyth in the early 1980s.

McCummings played as a receiver and safety for North Forsyth football and went on to play at Wake Forest. 

Rodney Cooper was an all conference athlete as a sprinter in the Metro 4-A from 1984-88 and went on to compete in track at App State.
