West Forsyth falls to Hoggard in 8A boys soccer state championship

West Forsyth’s boys soccer team fell to Hoggard in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 8A state championship game on Thursday night.

Hoggard scored once in each half and held West Forsyth scoreless en route to a 2-0 win.

At the 5:25 mark, Ari Tanner retrieved the ball off a deflection and drilled home an unassisted goal from five yards out.

Hoggard led 1-0 at halftime.

James McLean scored the second goal for Hoggard at the 50:45 mark, giving the Vikings a two-goal cushion. The second goal was assisted by Jace Tucker.

Tanner was named the Most Valuable Player of the game with the game-winning goal. Hoggard’s Joseph Dehmer and West Forsyth’s Ethan Barghout were named Sportsmanship Award winners.

West Forsyth’s Campden Bishop led the team in shot attempts with two, but a dominant Hoggard defense kept the Titans without a shot on goal in the game.

West Forsyth keeper Gernando Espinoza saved 3-of-5 shots on goal by Hoggard, led by two from Tucker.

The Titans finished the season with a 20-3-2 overall record, including a 9-0-1 mark in the Central Piedmont 7A/8A Conference. Hoggard is 22-1-2 on the year.

The 8A state championship was played at Guilford College’s Armfield Athletic Center in Greensboro.
