Six WSFCS wrestlers win individual state championships

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools were well-represented at the N.C. High School Athletic Association individual wrestling state championships in Greensboro.
 
Two boys and four girls from Forsyth County won individual state titles, and several others placed in the top four.
 
In the boys’ tournament, R.J. Reynolds’ Jaylen Wheeler won the 285-pound state championship in the 7A classification. Wheeler pinned Quentin Whisonafe of A.L. Brown at the 3:33 mark of the championship match.
 
Abdul-Jamil Zaggout of West Forsyth won the 132-pound championship in the 8A tournament, claiming an 11-4 decision over Northwest Guilford’s Tristen Lawrence.
 
Other notable boys wrestling results:
 
  • Misael Rivera (Glenn) – 4th place, 157-pound weight class (6A)
  • Joram Gnamien-Brou (Walkertown) – 4th place, 175-pound weight class (3A)
  • Cooper Ranson (Atkins) – 2nd place, 175-pound weight class (5A)

Girls Wrestling State Championships

Glenn’s Millyanes Rivera won the 107-pound state championship in the 6A tournament after pinning Swansboro’s Ryleigh Cline at the 4:00 mark of the match.
 
Taylor Williams of Glenn took top honors in the 6A 152-pound weight class, taking an 8-2 decision over Scotland’s Latia Williams.
 
R.J. Reynolds’ Saly Alcantara won first place in the 7A 145-pound weight class after pinning Chapel Hill’s Olyve Havens in the championship bout.
 
Layan Zaitawi of West Forsyth claimed first place in the 8A 100-pound weight class. Zaitawi pinned Laney’s Yesan Huang at the 2:17 mark in the championship match.

  • Jadyn Magallanes (West Forsyth) – 3rd place, 132-pound weight class (8A)
  • Genesis Hall (Atkins) – 4th place, 152-pound weight class (5A)
  • Devan Bull (West Forsyth) – 4th place, 152-pound weight class (8A)
  • Sophia Dowling (Atkins) – 2nd place, 165-pound weight class (5A)
  • Bella Almanza (West Forsyth) – 3rd place, 165-pound weight class (8A)
