Jefferson Tryout Procedures

Tryout INFO:

Students must have completed paperwork to tryout, this is a state mandate. There is a blue banner on the home page with a parent tutorial for DRAGONFLY @ https://www.dragonflymax.com/. No paperwork should be sent to the school. Dragonfly paperwork is due 3 school days before tryouts! Emailed packets will not be accepted. All forms must be submitted on the Dragonfly platform, no exceptions.

1. ALL students must come to tryouts with a plain white t shirt that we can write a number on in permanent marker. Students must choose a sport, they can not try out for a team, be cut, then try out for another team that made cuts. Cross Country will not make cuts.

2. Tryouts will be on a staggered schedule, be sure to pay attention to the athletic calendar for when your grade level tryout. Failure to participate in BOTH required days of tryout will automatically cut you from the team. Every student-athlete trying out for a sport at TJMs gets TWO days to be evaluated. Coaches may have a 3rd day of tryouts and may also make a “1st cut” and ask certain players to come back. That same coach may then have a “final cut.” We leave those decisions to our coaches! Please pay attention to details that are being announced! (Via: Social Media, School Announcements, etc.)

3. NO TRAVEL TEAM OR CLUB TEAM APPAREL is permitted during tryouts.

4. When the heat index is above 95 degrees, we are not permitted to hold outside activities, students please listen to announcements  and parents please pay attention to the weather during the hotter months. In the spring, students will need to come to tryouts with layers, students dressed inappropriately for the cold will not be permitted to tryout (this is to prevent injury!)

5. TRYOUTS ARE CLOSED TO PARENTS. Parents are NOT allowed to come watch tryouts or practices. This means, you as a parent are not allowed to be within view of the coaches during tryouts or practices. If tryouts are indoors, we ask that you wait in your car rather than in the building. If practices are outdoors, please wait in front of the building.

6. The athletic activity bus will run during tryouts and during seasons, please let your coaches know if you need activity bus transportation. Due to the lack of BUSES and/or BUS DRIVERS, there may not always be a bus transporting athletes back to school grounds if there are tryouts or games off campus!! Please pay attention to those details!

7. On the FIRST DAY OF TYROUTS: Students will meet Coach Covington in the gym after dismissal. He will clear them for tryouts, then they will meet with their coaches. Baseball and Softball tryouts will be off campus at Northwest Little League, athletes should be picked up at NW LL, if there is NO BUS bringing them back from tryouts! ALL other tryouts will end by 4:00, please plan on picking your student up in the front parking lot. If your student is walking home or to the YMCA after tryouts, please send a note for the coach.

8. Students must come prepared for tryouts, wearing proper attire, footwear, and bringing personal gear (ex. baseball glove). We do not provide equipment for team sports. Students may ask their core teachers if they can leave their gear in their rooms during the day or they can leave them in the locker rooms!

If you have any questions regarding these procedures, please contact our Athletic Director: Coach Covington EXT: 74026 OR (mwcovington@wsfcs.k12.nc.us) PRIOR (not the day of) to tryouts beginning.
